Crackdown on witches in Gambia

Amnesty International reports that Gambian security forces have detained up to 1,000 people on suspicion of being witches.

The Gambian police deny the claim, but Amnesty has first-hand accounts of victims being help in secret detention camps and forced to drink substances that have killed at least two people.

The president of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh blames the death of his aunt on witchcraft.

In 2007 Jammeh claimed he had a cure for AIDS and treated people using herbs and incantations.
