After the first case of swine flu was confirmed in Israel, the Deputy Health Minister, a member of the ultra-religious United Torah Judaism party, announced that they would use the term "Mexican flu" so they could avoid speaking the word "swine".
Apparently, they can't keep kosher if they say "swine", or their delicate sensibilities would be offended?
Why the hell did God create pigs if they're so obnoxious to Jews?

I'm Muslim and hate pigs as much as Jews do, but I still call it SWINE flu.
I don't eat pigs either, but that's because I'm a vegetarian. I'm curious about why Jews and Muslims hate pigs.
They are very intelligent creatures and don't you believe that God created them? If they are to be reviled, why did God put them on Earth?
I'm puzzled.
Hi Nona,
I love your blog!
To aswer your question about why do Muslims hate pigs. I am a convert to Islam of 71/2 years and am no expert on this subject, but I could post numerous verses from the Qur'an about it, that really don't tell why, other then that pigs are considered unclean, and so we are forbidden to eat them. (dogs are also considered unclean and it is said in an Hadith by Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) that angels don't visit the home of someone who has a dog. I have one.)
I had a hard time giving up pork after I converted, and the only way I knew how to get it out of my diet was to become a vegetarian(vegan wannabe). Sites like peta.org helped me to achieve that!
I wish you would post as often a did a few years ago!
Khadijah
I don't hate pigs, though I think born Muslims do. I owned a pot bellied pig in the early 90's and loved her dearly, and would own one again if my landlord and the city would allow it(I'd keep it a secret from Muslim fiends! lol)
God did create pigs. He also created bats, but no one wants to eat them, regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof.
Would you like me to post Qur'an verses about pigs? Or I could email you some. I don't know if we're allowed to wear pig leather? I doubt it. (Oh no! What will I do with my new pig leather jacket??) LOL (I'll email the Imam (simular to a Minister) and ask him and let you know about wearing them.)
Hi Khadijah. Thank you for the compliments. I've been curious for a long time about why some religions make dietary restrictions. Catholics once had to restrict their dietary choices on Friday's but they changed that practice.
I love animals too much to eat any of them, so if I were inclined to join a religion, I'd have to be a Buddhist or a Hindu. I actually don't know enough about either of them to be sure, but I think they suggest a vegetarian diet.
I don't have very much free time for blogging these days, but I read your post on your blog and am hoping to find the time to write a comment there. Your life experiences are remarkable and I'm so glad your eyesight has returned.
Hi Nona,
Catholiocs not eating meat n Friday was a law created hundreds of years ago as a way to get people to consume body-needing iodine. It ws told to Catholics it was actually a sacrafice to eat fish on Friday's. This law has long been outdated and is no longer taught because nowadays it's actually a luxery to eat fish(when you consider the cost) and and idoine is supplemted through most table salt.
I also love animals to much to eat them. I originally became a vegetarian as a way to avoid pork. But after checking out sites like peta.org, I care more about the animals.
Some religions advocate, or even require vegetarism, but there are vegetarians in all religions.
Thanks for reading the one post on my blog. It's pretty long, isn't it?
I started the blog to describe to people of all religions what it is like to live and die as a Muslim. I have stage3 follicular lymphoma - an incurable form of cancer. I was diagnosed on March 6 of this year.
I lost interest in the blog when I decided to create a web site to help Muslims in an 8 county area where I live find rsources to survive the recession. Most Muslims here are immigrants and may not be aware of the private and government rsources available to people.

I started the site as a way (According to Islamic teaching) to gain extra rewards in Heaven by helping others (we are judged by our intent, so even if it doesn't help anyone, I will still be rewarded for my intent.)
I have about 100 pages to ad.
I really do enjoy reading your writing. You are able to express your beliefs and opinnions without being offensive. That is a gift!
I hate no one, love everyone and have much tolerance for thebeliefs(or lack of)of others. I'm against everything evil, such as racism, nativism, gay-bashers, you name it!
Man! I hate CAPTCHAS! LOL!
What a kind and caring person you are. I'm so sorry to hear about your health challenges.
Thank you for commenting on my blog.
